Four other Southern breweries cranking out good brews
Alltech’s Lexington Brewing Company
Lexington, Kentucky
Aged in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries, Alltech’s Bourbon Barrel Ale is a true product of the Bluegrass State, and so aromatic that the brewery recommends you drink it from a snifter. kentuckyale.com
Lazy Magnolia
Kiln, Mississippi
Kiln is known as the bootleg capital of Mississippi and the hometown of serial retiree Brett Favre. But it’s also home to the first microbrewery in the state, Lazy Magnolia, which claims to brew Southern tradition. And with beers such as the Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale (made with whole roasted pecans), that’s not just a slogan. lazymagnolia.com
Terrapin Beer Company
Athens, Georgia
Though Terrapin sells its popular standards throughout the Southeast, it’s the list of limited-edition specialty brews that really blows minds. Visit the brewery in Athens to try one of these so-called side projects. Examples include a dark Belgian stout known as the Dark Side, and Capt’n Krunkles, a black IPA. terrapinbeer.com
Cigar City Brewing
Tampa, Florida
Keen on the rich culture in their hometown of Tampa, the folks at Cigar City Brewing make bold beers reflecting the local heritage, including the Humidor Series, aged in cigar box cedar, and the Jai Alai IPA, a “monster” IPA, with double the alcohol content of some of its competitors. cigarcitybeer.com
