My name is M.K. Quinlan and I recently accepted my dream job as senior style editor here at G&G. My family—husband Paul and dog Phil—rambled down I-95 from Washington, D.C., over the weekend with music blaring and our hearts swelling. We are so happy to be back down South

Instagram Inspiration

By Elizabeth HutchisonBelle DecorSeptember 12, 2012

As a part of our August/September Southern Style cover story, we introduced a talented group of artists, craftsmen, and designers—a cross-section of the South’s thriving new creative class. While the region has long proved fertile ground for artists, now more than ever, many are choosing to put down roots in Dixie rather than setting their sights on the big city

90 Years at the High Hampton Inn

By Jessica MischnerBelle DecorAugust 14, 2012

In an age when eschewing expected amenities such as WiFi in every room—hell, even phones in every room—would sound the death knell for most hotels, the High Hampton Inn has managed to stay in business for 90 years without doing much in the way of modernization.

By Elizabeth HutchisonBelle DecorJuly 17, 2012

Tennessee designers Emil Congdon (Congdon won a 2010 Made in the South Award for his handsome handcrafted leather bags) and Otis James, who nabbed the same honor in 2011 for his hand-stitched neckties, are leaving behind their respective backyard studios in favor of a shared workshop and showroom in Nashville’s Marathon Village. We caught up with the duo to find out more.

Building an Heirloom—Gator Style

By Jay SjoholmBelle DecorJune 28, 2012

An American alligator belt is something I consider an heirloom piece—something to keep, cherish, and, eventually, hand down to the next generation. Not only is it an investment, but it’s also a unique personal accessory. If you've ever wondered what goes into making an alligator belt, my friend Martin Dingman shed some light on the process.

From Maine, With Love

By Jessica MischnerBelle DecorJune 20, 2012

There's nothing Southern about Maine, but the nature-inspired collection of men's grooming products from Portland General Store reflects a land-loving sensibility we can't help but get behind. From soap and after-shave to shampoo and conditioner, each item is made using simple ingredients and a no-shortcuts approach—plus, rugged, decidedly masculine scents. There's no better place for one-stop sundry shopping.

Sid Mashburn's New Suit

By Jay SjoholmBelle DecorJune 14, 2012

Sid Mashburn, the owner of the Atlanta men’s store of the same name, has taken a sockless leap forward with the recent release of his own suit. Made in Italy with Bemberg lining, horn buttons, and a lot of by-hand detailing, each suit features a slimmer cut with natural shoulders, a slightly shorter length, and, perhaps most appealing, an uncommonly low price point (starting at $995 - $1395 off the rack—custom has approximately a 20% premium).  It’s a timeless look.  And what’s better, the more miles you put on the suit, the better it fits, thanks to full-canvas construction (wool and horsehair fabric sewn between the outer and inner linings act as the skeleton of the jacket), which allows the suit to breakdown naturally to your body.

Trend Watch: Nautical Finds

By Elizabeth HutchisonBelle DecorMay 21, 2012

Each summer, as the Fahrenheit begins to rise, nautical-inspired products start cropping up on shelves everywhere from big box stores to high-end fashion houses and local boutiques, so much so that the signature red, white, and blue hues have become more of a summertime staple than an in-one-year-out-the-next trend. It’s not hard to understand the appeal, though. Done right, nautical nods can add both classic elegance and casual beach chic without feeling contrived. And although it’s hard to beat the crisp clean lines of a navy and white French sailor shirt, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite maritime-inspired pieces.

Snapshots from High Point

By Jessica MischnerBelle DecorMay 7, 2012

Last week's High Point Furniture Spring Market was a delightful, caffeine-fueled whirlwind of meetings, previews, and frenzied note-taking. Everyone from Bob Timberlake and the Hable sisters to Suzanne Kasler and Alexa Hampton was on hand to offer insight and observations and to answer questions about the new collections on display. I saw the return and elevation of made-to-measure options at Hickory Chair, champagne-bubbles-smart pieces at Lee Industries (zipper-backed chairs!), and the most insanely comfortable woven leather loungers and wide-armed couches (the better for sitting side-saddle) at Hancock & Moore. But the truly interesting takeaways are the trends that emerge from the market as a whole. Here are six to keep an eye on.
