Derby Style

In the pantheon of dress code–worthy occasions, the Kentucky Derby is up there with 7 p.m. weddings and Halloween parties. We’ve created our version of a His-and-Hers race-day style guide. From classic-with-a-twist hats to festive accessories, we’d wager there’s something here for everyone.

Shopping Guide:

Ties: Neckwear from vineyard vines, the official style sponsor of the Kentucky Derby.

Pocket Squares: Sid Mashburn’s cotton pocket squares are as absorbent as any bandana.

Jacket: This Derby Day look from Brooks Brothers x Social Primer combines traditional equestrian motif fabric with a classic navy blazer.

Shoes: Rendered in tone-on-tone chambray-blue nylon and suede, these Topsiders are a breathable alternative to leather weejuns.

Sunglasses: Classic sunglasses from Ben Silver, Kentucky-fied with blue-green lenses.

Belt: Think of this Martin Dingman Louisiana alligator belt as an investment piece that will last long after the races are over.

Shirt:It’s impossible to go wrong in a classic white oxford, and Ledbury makes one of the best.

Hat: Brent Black’s handwoven Kentucky Smith Panama hat is old-school Southern with an Indiana Jones twist.

Notebook: Handcrafted from vegetable-tanned leather, this pocket notebook is perfect for recording horse tips or gonzo-style observations of bourbon-fueled merriment.

Shopping Guide:

Hat: Opt for understated with this chic cotton topper from Eugenia Kim.

Dress: Slip on a simple shift. We love this navy paneled version from Tibi.

Jacket: In a bold mustard yellow, this Rag & Bone tuxedo jacket adds pop and polish.

Bracelets: Mix and match gold bangles from Kate Spade.

Bag: This vintage-inspired J. Crew carryall in pecan leather holds the day’s essentials, including the requisite flask of Kentucky’s finest.

Shoes: Sensible flats are a smart choice on Derby Day, but there’s no reason they shouldn’t be stylish like these metallic-flecked cork slip-ons from Kate Spade.

Necklace: Make a bold statement with this amber and gold necklace from Southern jewelry designer Hyla Dewitt.

Sunglasses: Oversized tortoise shades from Karen Walker.
