First Listen: Deer Tick’s "Mirror Walls"

By Jed PortmanSeptember 12, 2013

In 2007, the alt-country band Deer Tick came roaring out of Providence, Rhode Island, with their debut album, War Elephant. Things have changed since then. Frontman John McCauley went through some hard times, broke off an engagement, and ultimately—like so many other musicians—packed up his instruments and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he has settled comfortably into the local music scene.

Negativity, Deer Tick’s newest album, is a testament to the band’s new maturity. The rock-and-roll anthems aren’t gone, but McCauley’s songwriting has become decidedly more introspective, and the band’s sonic palette has grown to match it. The album comes out on September 24, but we have a first listen of the track, “Mirror Walls,” today. Check it out below, and click here to preorder Negativity.
