The Pig & Punch Party

During New Orleans’ tenth annual Tales of the Cocktail—a celebration that began July 25 and will last until July 29—over 20,000 bartenders, booze makers, spirits journalists, and libation enthusiasts have gathered in the Big Easy for five days of seminars, tasting sessions, competitions, lunches, and dinners. But although this may sound like a typical cocktail festival, the party involves more than just eating and drinking. This past Tuesday, a group of 70 Tales attendees volunteered to spend the day scrubbing, painting, organizing, and cleaning the KIPP Renaissance High School in East New Orleans. For the third year in a row, the Bon Vivants, a San Francisco-based events and bartending team, has put together this charity event as a means of giving back to New Orleans, a city they have come to love over the past ten years through Tales of the Cocktail. As a 10-year-old, Robert Newton wasn’t exactly excited to spend his weekends on his hands and knees, digging in the family vegetable garden at his home in Arkansas. Today, the chef/owner of Seersucker in Carroll Gardens, will happily tell you that it’s the best culinary training life ever handed him. “My parents grew all sorts of vegetables,” Newton says. “They canned green beans … stuff like that. I look back now and realize that it was an awesome experience. At the time, I think I probably just thought, 'Damn, it’s hot out here.'"

The Other Music Festival in New Orleans

Seven years ago, local New Orleans musicians Alex McMurray of the band Tin Men and his buddy Chaz Leary were lamenting the difficulty of securing a place on stage at the city’s annual Jazz Fest. So, motivated by a mix of frustration and inspiration, they decided to throw their own musical gathering, dubbed ChazFest. Held last week on May 2, the backyard Bywater event drew music enthusiasts from around America. For seven hours, grassroots acts of all sorts rocked the two small stages, playing to packed crowds.

To say chef Marcus Samuelsson been “busy” in the last few years is akin to saying William Faulkner “wrote some stuff.” At 24-years-old, Chef Marcus Samuelsson was the youngest chef ever to receive three stars from the New York Times. The James Beard Foundation attached the accolade of “Best International Cookbook” to his 2006 African-inspired title, The Soul of a New Cuisine, and he served as the guest chef at the first state dinner held by the Obama administration in 2009. In 2010, Samuelsson won BRAVO’s hit cooking show Top Chef Masters, and simultaneously opened his Harlem Soul Food restaurant, Red Rooster. The secret to success at Red Rooster, however, has not been in the sauce, but rather in The South.
