A Woman of the Cloth

By Jessica MischnerBelle DecorMarch 12, 2012

Designer Melissa Kirkpatrick approaches interiors with the same big-picture vision your most stylish friend would apply to her wardrobe. It’s all about the ensemble, which is why, after years of designing interiors and consulting for a high-end fabric furnishings company, the Georgia native decided to develop her own line of fabrics as a whole-room design solution for decorators and their clients.

Oscar Night Winner

By Jessica MischnerGood EatsFebruary 24, 2012

Whether you’re hosting a viewing party for the Oscars, attending one, or just looking for something good to munch on this weekend, nothing beats Martha Foose’s bacon crackers as a simple snack. They’re unfussy, impossible to mess up, and they go with everything (though, like all leading actors, they can't help but stand out). One of our editors tops hers with pimento cheese (click here for a fantastic pimento cheese recipe) for next-level flavor, but they’re delicious all on their own–just bacon and crackers. Either way, we’re pretty sure Abilene and Minnie would approve

The Art of Football

By Jessica MischnerThe Sporting SouthJanuary 5, 2012

Let me be clear: I rarely, and I mean rarely, get excited about anything having to do with football. Sure, I love the fall and tailgating and college sports as much as the next self-respecting Southern lass, but professional football might as well be cricket for all I know or care about it. But I've discovered a new-found appreciation for the history of the sport thanks to Guts & Glory, Taschen's new coffee table compendium of the most beautiful shots in the history of professional football taken by Neil Leifer, one of the most famous sports photographers to ever tote a camera.

Portrait of a Bookshelf

By Jessica MischnerBelle DecorDecember 14, 2011

I have a borderline pathological obsession with cookbooks. Old, new, how-to, high-brow, specialized, spiral-bound, gingham-covered, handwritten, or altogether indecipherable (metric measurements! jello molds!)–as long as the pictures are good, I'm an easy sell. Or I was, at least, until two years ago, when my husband, Will, gifted me this print by Georgia-born, New York-based artist Jane Mount for Christmas.

An Urban Steeplechase Event

By Jessica MischnerSouthern in the CityMay 12, 2011

I've spent the last week traveling up and down the east coast, from points South all the way up to Brimfield, Massachusetts (more on that trip coming soon). As a result, I missed Eleven Madison Park's annual Kentucky Derby Party in New York City. Short of actually experiencing the event at Churchill Downs–something I've yet to do–it's one of the most fun ways to watch the Derby. Since I couldn't make it (or any of the other fun viewing parties taking place), I asked my dear friend, Michael Harlan Turkell, to go in my place. Michael is an incredibly talented photographer who's not afraid to get up close and personal to get the best shot (notice how folks ham it up for him in the photos below). He also knows a thing or two about bourbon and deviled eggs, having aspired to chef-dom once upon a time (any food- and farm-loving Southerner should tune in to The Food Seen, Michael's show on the Heritage Radio network). Enjoy the snaps.
