Oxford's One-Stop Shop

By Haskell HarrisNovember 1, 2011

Last week I found myself in High Point, North Carolina, for fall furniture market. And yes, I have plenty of new products to fill you in on. But first, I wanted to share a different kind of discovery.

During my visit to the Hickory Chair showroom, I ran into Kate Roebuck, who works for Hable Construction in Athens, Georgia. Hable Construction has a fabric collection with the 100-year-old furniture company and Kate was there showing off their new designs.

I talked to Kate for a long time about all the interesting things happening in Athens and all around the South, and she brought up Erin Abbott's charming store in Oxford, Mississippi. It's called Amelia Presents.

When I got back to the office, I couldn't wait to find out more about it. The best way I can describe the aesthetic is that it's sort of a modern general store.

Erin sells everything from jewelry, to stationary, to home goods, to local art, to vintage items, to small-batch gourmet goodies, to tickets to shows at the nearby Lyric Theatre.

Which means that you could stop in and sample a donut cupcake from Oxford's Honey Bee Bakery, buy tickets to a Carolina Chocolate Drops show, or pick up an original gift for a friend or yourself.

Yet another entrepreneurial Southerner opening a super-stylish shop. How cool is that?

If you are traveling to Oxford this fall (for a football game or whatnot), make a point to stop in and give Erin a shout.

And thanks for the tip, Kate!
