Saying goodbye to Southern Accents

By Haskell Harris | September 4, 2009 | Design

This week, Time Inc. mailed the last issue of Southern Accents, a magazine that defined style in the South for over thirty years.

I would like to say goodbye, not only because it is a tremendous loss for our industry, but also because the loss is personal.

When I worked for Time Inc.'s Cottage Living magazine (also shuttered, last January), Southern Accents was just down the hall, always abuzz with the latest happenings in the design world, always pinning lush new spreads to the wall as each issue came together. I knew many people there well (both current editors and those who have moved on to other publications).

I also grew up with Southern Accents and it seems surreal that it will no longer be published, and that my mom, an interior designer for almost as long as the magazine has been out, will no longer read it by the fire in our family room, notebook in hand to jot down ideas for her own work.

Here's to a magazine worth remembering and a very talented staff that put years of their lives into producing it. May they all go on to find new, fulfilling adventures down the line.

I am so bummed. Every time a new Southern Accents came through my door slot, I jumped for joy! I have been a voracious reader of it for years. Those gorgeous homes featured continue to inspire me.

As a former Coastal Living editor at Southern Progress and, since then, a freelance contributor to Southern Accents, I must add a note to say how saddened I was by Accents' demise. Too cruel. The latest issues were especially beautiful, and the legacy it leaves is incomparable.

I worked at Country Home, a Meredith magazine in the 80's. Another casualty of the advertising downturn. I feel your loss!

Thanks for the kind post, Haskell. I am a big fan of G&G--just got the new issue yesterday and look forward to diving in. Hope all is well with you.

What an eloquent tribute Haskell. It still feels surreal to me too.

Oh My! I too am shocked. I don't subscribe to many publications but Southern Accents made the cut easily.

I just subscribed 2 months aqo! Time, Inc certainly took my money with no mention of last editions. Very dissapointing.

I am very unhappy about the loss of that excellent magazine. It is a gorgeous, classy read. It lured me to retire in the South with the well written articles and beautiful photography, Dang it! Say, it ain't so.
