An Urban Steeplechase Event

By Jessica MischnerMay 12, 2011

I've spent the last week traveling up and down the east coast, from points South all the way up to Brimfield, Massachusetts (more on that trip coming soon). As a result, I missed Eleven Madison Park's annual Kentucky Derby Party in New York City. Short of actually experiencing the event at Churchill Downs–something I've yet to do–it's one of the most fun ways to watch the Derby. Since I couldn't make it (or any of the other fun viewing parties taking place), I asked my dear friend, Michael Harlan Turkell, to go in my place. Michael is an incredibly talented photographer who's not afraid to get up close and personal to get the best shot (notice how folks ham it up for him in the photos below). He also knows a thing or two about bourbon and deviled eggs, having aspired to chef-dom once upon a time (any food- and farm-loving Southerner should tune in to The Food Seen, Michael's show on the Heritage Radio network). Enjoy the snaps.
