Art Gone Wild

Come February, Charleston, South Carolina, gears up for one of the year’s biggest, and we might add sporting-est, to-dos: the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. The country’s largest event of its kind, SEWE (February 12–14) brings together outdoor enthusiasts from across the South at events all over town, from birds of prey flight demos to wild game cooking classes to the always-entertaining Dock Dogs competition.

The cornerstone of the expo, though, is its outstanding collection of wildlife and sporting art, this year featuring work from more than 120 artists. In addition, not to be missed is a stop at the Audubon Gallery, which is hosting a rare exhibit and sale in conjunction with the expo. The exhibit features the work of noted decoy carver and painter Mark McNair of Virginia, especially known for his gorgeous carvings of shorebirds, some of which have gone for tens of thousands at auction.

The expo is well worth a visit just for the art alone, but if you can’t make it, we’ve assembled a gallery of some of our favorites. And if you are in town, make sure to stop by the G&G tent in Marion Square and say howdy.
