Coffee drinkers in Athens, Georgia, have been buzzing lately, and it’s more than just the caffeine. The coffee talk is about a little company called 1000 Faces Coffee, whose beans have already found their way into a number of Athens eateries, including Farm 255 and the White Tiger.
Owner and micro-roaster Benjamin Myers sources his beans by working directly with small growers around the world (called “Direct Trade”). Offerings range from a bold and spicy Sumatra to a bright and slightly sweet espresso blend. But finding high-quality beans is only part of the story. Once they arrive, the beans are hand-roasted in small batches right there in Athens, allowing for the perfect mix of time and temperature depending on each variety. And they’re roasted just prior to shipping—rather than sitting around on a shelf for months—to ensure freshness. If you’re in the area, stop by the roasting facility on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 10 a.m. for a “cupping” (the coffee version of a wine tasting). Or order up a bag online, and see for yourself what the buzz is about.
