One Weekend Only: Augusta Pimento Cheese

Get a taste of minor-league baseball and a Southern sandwich tradition

With their upcoming name change, Augusta’s GreenJackets are the latest minor league baseball team to go a little corny—or in this case, cheesy. This weekend only, the Augusta “Pimento Cheese will take the field in specially designed jerseys bearing a wide-eyed sandwich mascot, playing against the Lakewood BlueClaws from New Jersey and the Hickory Crawdads from North Carolina, respectively. Like the team’s regular name, the new temporary one is also a nod to the Augusta National Golf Club, but instead of coveted attire, inspiration comes from its famous sandwiches.

Off-field, the Cheese will offer plenty of tasty food concessions, too, plus merch, promotions, and a player jersey auction after Saturday’s game to benefit Walton Options for Independent Living, which provides education and employment resources to the disabled community in Georgia and South Carolina. Says Ann Campbell-Kelly, the organization’s development specialist: “If you’re gonna rebrand, why not have fun and go with something everyone likes?”
