Palmetto Bluff Artist in Residence 2018

In 2018, Garden & Gun and Palmetto Bluff hosted eleven Made in the South Award winners and finalists to a stay in Moreland Village at Palmetto Bluff for the second year of the Artist in Residence program. During their stay, the artists taught workshops and led discussions on their craft for G&G readers and friends and Palmetto Bluff residents.

Oliver Thames of Bulls Bay OYRO kicked off our 2018 Artist in Residence program with a traditional lobster bake atop his award-winning grill.

In March, guests tasted and created their own  delicious cocktails with the help of Mick Matricciano of Cannonborough Craft Soda.  During his stay, Mick taught the fundamentals of cocktail making using his delicious syrups.

Guests created their own feather earrings alongside Ben Ross and Jeff Plotner of Brackish in April using the Brackish signature feather style.

In May, Suzanne LeRoux of One Love Organics taught Palmetto Bluff guests the basics of organic skin care and aromatherapy. In this workshop, guests created their own roll-on fragrance and bath salts using organic oils such as lavender, vanilla, and orange.

Christina Jervey of Christina Jervey Jewelry taught guests the fundamentals of jewelry wax carving in this beginner’s workshop in June. Guests created their own design using Jervey’s tools to be cast in bronze following the workshop.

Mary Campbell, who is known mainly for her line of candles, We Took to the Woods, also shared her gift of floral arranging with guests in July. Guests explored Palmetto Bluff lands with Campbell to forage their own greenery and florals and create custom arrangements.

Guests escaped the August heat with Elizabeth Seeger Jolly to create their own Satchel handbag in this hands-on workshop.

Colin O’Reilly, of Terrane Glass Designs, and his wife, Rachel, taught workshop attendees in September how to create the perfect terrarium inside one of Colin’s hand blown glass terrariums.

Chef Cory Bahr demonstrated the many uses of the Sea Island Forge signature kettle and open-fire cooking techniques while accompanying Sea Island Forge owners Steve and Sandy Schoettle in Palmetto Bluff in October.

Brian Noyes of Virginia-based Red Truck Bakery taught guests the art of fine baking with his signature rum and bourbon cakes in November.

Guests learned the history of cacao and the process of making French Broad Chocolate’s signature “sipping chocolate” and truffles during Jael Rattigan’s Holiday How-To workshop in December.
