Skating in the Park

Located on the green space behind the Huntsville Museum of Art, this outdoor rink, celebrating its fourteenth season, is made of real ice. Each year, it’s constructed before Halloween and draws about 18,000 skaters, who are visible on the rink’s live skating camera. Entry is valid all day, and special programs include family night—with free skate rentals for kids nine and under—and DJ night, plus other holiday events.

Knoxville, Tennessee

Skate under the stars at Knoxville’s Holidays on Ice, located downtown in Market Square. There, find Wicked- and Swiftie-themed skate nights, plus free ice cream sundaes from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. After enjoying unlimited skate time, meander through the pedestrian-only area, peeking into boutiques and wandering around the sculptures in Krutch Park.
Camp North Pole
Charlotte, North Carolina

Camp North End—a seventy-six-acre Charlotte hub for living, playing, eating, and drinking located on a historic industrial site—transforms into Camp North Pole each year around the holidays. Skate on the outdoor rink, surrounded by igloos, and grab a bite at one of the development’s twenty-plus dining spots. For the first few Saturdays of December, also visit local shops at the seasonal Mistletoe Market.
Ice on Main
Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville, South Carolina’s Ice on Main has returned for its fifteenth year. Located in the heart of downtown, the open-air rink offers hour-long skating sessions seven days a week until mid-January—save for Christmas Day—and skaters can rent the rink for private events. Walk a few steps up Main Street to see a thirty-foot Christmas tree, or stroll down to a holiday market (open through December 28) with live music and local vendors to feel plenty of Hallmark-like cheer.
Winter Village
Tampa, Florida

Located along the Tampa Riverwalk, the Winter Village at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is celebrating ten years of ice skating, small-business shopping, and twinkling light displays. Open daily until 11:00 p.m., the outdoor covered rink schedules seventy-five-minute increments of skate time and themed skate nights—where guests can dress for events like Grinchmas and an ugly sweater party. After an evening of skating, hop aboard the river of lights cruise for a trip down the Hillsborough River to look at the city’s waterfront decor.
Skate the Station
Atlanta, Georgia

Practice figure eights on this 11,000-foot outdoor rink and skate around lit Christmas trees and holiday decor in Atlantic Station, a midtown hot spot. Taking two weeks to build and two weeks to dismantle at the end of the season, the family-friendly rink offers one-day passes and season tickets, plus rotating discounts for students, health care workers, and teachers. “As the largest outdoor ice-skating rink in metro Atlanta, Atlantic Station has become a favorite holiday tradition,” says Katie Boland, marketing and events manager at Atlantic Station. “Last year over 50,000 skaters made it their winter destination, and now in its thirteenth season, it promises even more magical memories on the ice.”

Opens Thanksgiving week and runs throughout the winter
The Allegheny Mountains provide a backdrop for this covered outdoor rink at Canaan Valley Resort State Park. After a two-hour skate session, warm up at the rink’s outdoor fireplace or keep the activities going—hit the slopes, go snow tubing on a 1,200-foot lane, or choose from fifteen miles of snowy trails to hike, cross-country ski, and snowshoe.
