Garden & Gun Magazine Club

An intimate conversation inspired by the pages of the Garden Issue.

Join us at the Garden & Gun Club at The Battery Atlanta for the debut of the Garden & Gun Magazine Club, a new series designed to bring the magazine’s stories off the page and into lively, in-person conversations.

Launching alongside the upcoming Garden Issue, this intimate gathering invites guests to enjoy cocktails and passed appetizers while engaging in a moderated Q&A with Alex Smith, Atlanta-based landscape designer and Shutze Award winner from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, and Elizabeth Florio, G&G’s senior digital editor, who profiled one of Smith’s stunning gardens in the issue. Read the story here. Your ticket includes refreshments during the speaker program, followed by a prix fixe brunch at the Garden & Gun Club.

The discussion will explore the magazine’s feature on Thistlewaite, a private property in Highlands, North Carolina, where Smith designed a classic English-style garden within a lush rhododendron forest, creating a “paradise of moss, leaf, and stone.” Smith will also share the gardening trends inspiring him now and the timeless mantras (and beloved plants) he carries into his award-winning landscapes. Designed for connection, the Magazine Club offers a relaxed setting where attendees can mingle and exchange ideas with fellow avid readers of G&G—all while celebrating the stories that bring us together.

Alex Smith

Alex Smith has worked on diverse projects across the United States, from the mountain and lake regions of the Carolinas to the Lowcountry of Coastal Georgia and Florida and the rugged Ozark Mountains. These projects range from formal estate gardens, public parks, historic garden restoration, new construction landscapes, and home garden renovation. In each locale, Smith applies the same design rigor to plant and materials selection as sensitivity to place. Smith led the landscape design and implementation efforts at a major resort property and golf course in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. He was also commissioned to design the Olga Goizueta Memorial Garden at the Atlanta History Center and an exhibition garden in the Levy Parterre at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
