NOLA’s Underground Gourmets

Six New Orleans food haunts worth seeking out

Bywater Ice Cream Speakeasy
This one kicks back up every summer as New Orleans sweats and screams for want of artisanal ice cream. Look out for flyers in the neighborhood come June.

Dash and Pony
This is a cocktail party—how much you pay for the drinks, and whether you pay at all, are up to you. The fact that two dedicated bartenders are whipping up rounds of elaborate craft cocktails is just a coincidence. facebook.com/dashandpony

Milkfish
Tucked into the back room of the Who Dat Coffee Café, Milkfish is open six days a week from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. The eponymous milkfish is the highlight here-—a constantly changing fish dish in a creamy Filipino sauce. facebook.com/atasteofthephillipines [sic]

Sentiments
Wine and Cheese Dive
Upstairs at Feelings Cafe on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, the hours melt back into years until you find yourself somewhere between Hemingway and Fitzgerald in 1920s Paris—wine and cheese included. sentimentsnola.com

TSAI
It looks like a house party, just a little better organized. TSAI thrives on Asian-inspired, mostly vegetarian dishes matched with cocktails, live music, and shifting venues. tsainola.wordpress.com

We’ve Got Soul
Upscale soul food is a dicey proposition, but chef Tres Barnard pulls off the classics with style. Every Friday night, from 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m, you get to see what a real pro does when he has nobody to please but his customers and himself. wevegotsoul.com
