When the summer heat settles in, it’s tempting to spend the season hiding somewhere with strong AC. But a growing list of direct international and domestic flights from Southern cities makes it easier than ever to trade sweltering afternoons for alpine breezes, cool coastal mornings, and mountain towns where you might actually want a light sweater after sunset. Quite a few of these routes leave from hot-hot-hot Miami, but travelers in Dallas, Charleston, Savannah, and beyond have some new options, too.

Dallas–Fort Worth to Athens, Greece

Athens in July can feel as blistering as the South, but think of American Airlines’ just-launched nonstop seasonal route from Dallas/Fort Worth as a gateway to the cooler mountains of Central Greece just a few hours’ drive away. After landing, rent a car and head toward Karpenisi, an alpine town tucked into the Pindus Mountains, roughly 3,000 feet above sea level. Stop for lunch with coastal views, and then notice how, as you wind higher, the landscape starts to feel surprisingly Appalachian: pine forests, rivers, waterfalls. No wonder then that Karpenisi also happens to be one of Asheville’s sister cities. Even in summer, evenings here call for a light scarf or sweater.

Many airports to London

Thankfully, British Airways has direct flights from the States to London covered: Popular routes leave from Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, Houston, Nashville, and new this year, St. Louis. Compared to a Southern summer, London’s milder temperatures feel like a breath of fresh air. And for solo travelers especially, it’s hard to beat. The Tube makes getting around remarkably easy, most neighborhoods are highly walkable, and the city rewards curiosity: Spend mornings browsing in Notting Hill, rainy afternoons inside museums, and evenings in centuries-old local pubs or walking along the Thames at sunset. For an affordable, well-located stay, citizenM London Victoria Station offers cleverly designed rooms (power outlets for American, UK, and European chargers), generous common areas, and a lively hotel bar that makes returning solo after a day out feel the right amount of social.

Charleston, South Carolina, to Burlington, Vermont

Newer budget airline Breeze has invested heavily in lesser-served routes, to the gratitude of travelers who live near smaller and mid-sized airports (check what their destination map covers here). Seasonal routes like the twice-weekly service from Charleston to Burlington make one of New England’s most creative and charming cities more accessible to Southerners desperate for sweater weather. Set along Lake Champlain and a drive away from the Green Mountains, Burlington is also an outdoors lover’s dream.

Multiple Southern cities to Zürich, Switzerland

Direct flights to Zürich from Southern cities like Miami, Atlanta, and Tampa have made easy work of a dreamy European escape: glittering lakes, tiny mountain villages, and temperatures that tend to stay in the seventies all summer long. New this summer, American Airlines also recently started direct flights to Zürich from Dallas–Fort Worth.

Your ideal itinerary: Spend a day swimming in the Limmat River or wandering Zürich’s old town before hopping aboard Switzerland’s famously efficient trains toward Lucerne, Interlaken, or the Bernese Oberland. Summer there feels almost impossibly picturesque, with cows grazing beneath snow-dusted peaks. And long lunches somehow always involve excellent cheese. Savannah to Portland, Maine

Breeze’s nonstop route from Savannah to Portland pairs two visually striking coastal cities, though Portland offers a dramatically cooler version of summer. Expect salty air, rocky shorelines, oyster shacks, and cool evening temperatures. Spend the day exploring Casco Bay, browsing downtown shops, or driving north along Maine’s rugged coastline before settling in for lobster rolls and cold oysters. For a boutique hotel stay, the Longfellow offers a relaxed, wellness-focused stay with a spa inspired by Nordic bathing traditions.

Fort Lauderdale to Bogotá, Colombia

This might be an unexpected cool-weather escape, but in Bogotá, temperatures often hover in the sixties thanks to the city’s high elevation in the Andes Mountains. Emirates’ Miami-to-Bogotá service has been going strong since 2024, and newly announced Avianca flights from Fort Lauderdale are making Colombia’s capital even easier to reach this summer. Stay at the thirteen-room Casa Legado, a renovated 1950s Art Deco house, or the Four Seasons Hotel Bogota for total luxury. Spend your days wandering the cobblestone streets of La Candelaria, riding the cable car up Monserrate for sweeping city views, and lingering over cocktails and Colombian coffee in Bogotá’s stylish cafés and bars in areas like Chapinero and Zona G.

Austin to Bozeman, Montana

Trade Austin’s triple-digit summer days for crisp mountain mornings and wide-open Montana skies. In June, Delta added a new nonstop Saturday route from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Bozeman, Montana, making it a cinch to reach one of the West’s most scenic escapes. Stay at the rustic, pet-friendly Field & Stream Lodge—the hotel has put together adventure guides for visitors that include fly fishing, hiking, breweries, jaunts to Yellowstone, and more. By night, expect cool air, star-filled skies, and the kind of quiet that can feel impossible to find back home.

Miami to Milan, Italy

This spring, American Airlines launched Miami’s only nonstop route to Milan, opening up one of Europe’s most stylish cities to South Floridians craving a cool (in more ways than one!) escape. Summer 2026 feels like an especially timely season to go, thanks to The Devil Wears Prada 2, but Milan offers far more than fashion. Spend mornings wandering the Brera district’s galleries and boutiques before a little break for aperitivos under slow-spinning café fans. One of Milan’s greatest advantages is proximity to the water: Lake Como sits just an hour away by train, so visitors can plan to soak up lakeside village views framed by mountains, gorgeous greenery, and grand old villas.

New Orleans to Seattle

There’s something oddly poetic about swapping one waterfront city for another, except this one smells like pine trees, espresso, and salt air instead of Sazeracs and sunscreen. Direct flights from New Orleans to Seattle mean trading the South’s heaviest summer heat for a city where even July mornings can feel a bit chilly. Spend your days riding the ferry across Puget Sound, browsing Pike Place Market, or drinking local wine with water views before heading toward Mount Rainier or the San Juan Islands. If you like cocktails, the scene is highly underrated there: Pop into Canon, home to one of the largest spirits selections in the world. The Walrus and the Carpenter is another mainstay, a hybrid restaurant/fishing pub that’s great for oysters and wine in the foodie-favorite Ballard neighborhood.
