In Highlands, North Carolina, luxury and the great outdoors have long been comfortable companions. Sitting at more than four thousand feet in elevation in the Southern Appalachians, the mountain town draws travelers as much for its cool temperatures and waterfall-laced trails as for acclaimed restaurants and hotels. But this scene is not limited to discerning nature enthusiasts. With plenty of paths, patios, and polished stays suited for four-legged travelers, Highlands extends a warm welcome to dogs.

Naturally, that welcome begins outdoors. The Highlands-Cashiers Plateau is packed with scenic trails fit for exploring on two legs and four paws. Set out for Secret Falls Trailhead, a forty-five-minute hike that rewards the effort with a thirty-five-foot waterfall—and plenty of creekside sniffing along the way. Or leash up for Whiteside Mountain National Recreation Trail, a pet-friendly route through the unspoiled Nantahala National Forest. Before hitting the woods, head to the Highlands Welcome Center, which offers maps and suggested itineraries to make the most of the plateau.

When both hiker and hound are ready to put their feet up, Highlands knows how to pamper. Highlander Mountain House welcomes dogs to its Bunkhouse, a stylish home base close to the heart of town. 200 Main keeps a limited number of dog-friendly rooms, while Skyline Lodge provides special accommodations for guests and their canine companions. At Trailborn Highlands, dogs are welcome in select rooms, while the Inn at Mill Creek offers pet-friendly suites within walking distance of Main Street—perfect for pups who prefer to end the day with one last turn around town.

For the full puppy package, however, The Park on Main has made four-legged hospitality something of a calling card. Dog-friendly suites come stocked with complimentary beds, bowls, and treats, while guests enjoy exclusive access to Mr. Pickles Dog Park, the inn’s private place for pups to stretch their legs, make a new friend, or simply burn off a little energy.

There’s plenty of room to roam beyond the hotel grounds, too. At Highlands Dog Park, pups can run off leash in a fenced-in setting, with a separate area reserved for small, senior, or more reserved dogs—a quieter corner for those who prefer to socialize at their own pace.

When it’s time to refuel, dogs can tag along to a number of local-favorite patios. Start the morning outside at Blue Bike Cafe, where the biscuit basket is reason enough to pull up a chair. Near Main Street, the Ugly Dog Public House pairs its fitting name with dog-friendly al fresco seating, while downtown’s Wild Thyme Gourmet offers seasonal outdoor tables for a leisurely lunch or dinner with your traveling companion. Sate your barbecue cravings at Highlands Smokehouse, where pups can lounge along outdoor tables along Franklin Road. Because Highlands understands that a luxury mountain getaway is even better with your best friend in tow.
