Follow Your Arrow: A Bourbon Tiki Cocktail

While most Polynesian-inspired cocktails lean on rum, Joseph Stinchcomb is rewriting the script at Bar Muse in Oxford, Mississippi

A bourbon cocktail with a pineapple slice

You don’t usually find bourbon in tiki drinks—Polynesian-inspired cocktails tend to lean hard on rum. But in more creative corners of the mixology world, there’s room for America’s native spirit in the tropics, or at least Joseph Stinchcomb of Bar Muse in Oxford, Mississippi, thinks so.

Here, pineapple juice provides the pleasant punch of island flavor within a blend of Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and High Wire Distilling Southern Amaro. It drinks like Trader Vic brought the luau to Kentucky.

Yield: 1 cocktail

For the cocktail

    • 1½ oz. Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

    • ½ oz. High Wire Distilling Southern Amaro

    • 1 oz. pineapple juice

    • ½ oz. lime juice

    • ½ oz. brown sugar vanilla syrup (recipe follows)

    • 3 drops tiki bitters

For the brown sugar vanilla syrup

    • 1 cup water

    • 1 vanilla pod or 1 tsp. vanilla extract

    • 1 cup brown sugar

Preparation

  1. Make the brown sugar vanilla syrup: Heat water on the stovetop and add vanilla pod. Allow vanilla to steep for 5 minutes. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Remove the vanilla pod. If using vanilla extract, add vanilla extract when adding brown sugar.

  2. Mix the cocktail: Add ingredients to a shaker and shake with ice. Pour into a rocks glass with ice. Serve.
