Scott Avett…painter

His artistic leanings extend well beyond music

If you’re a G&G reader or just a fan of Southern music, you likely know the name Scott Avett, the banjo-wielding co-frontman (with brother Seth) of the Avett Brothers. But what you might not know is that his artistic leanings extend well beyond music. In his off time (what little there is of it anyway, considering the band plays about 200 gigs a year), Scott Avett is also an accomplished painter. He holds a BFA from East Carolina University, and his work has been shown at galleries both in his home state of North Carolina and all the way to New York City.

This weekend, you can catch a rare chance to see his art in person in Charlotte. Part of a fundraiser for the Educational Center, the exhibit, called The Paintings of Scott Avett: Exploring Story and Spirituality, takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Charlotte’s SouthPark neighborhood. Admission is free, with original works and a limited-edition signed letterpress poster available for sale.

Check out a few examples of his paintings below (you might recognize one as the album cover from the band’s latest release, I and Love and You), and visit ArtStorySpirit.com for more information on the exhibit.
