Bardstown, Kentucky’s bourbon history stretches back more than two hundred years. Long before the town became synonymous with America’s native spirit, it benefited from a geological stroke of luck: a massive layer of calcium carbonate that filters mountain spring water into the crisp, clean, iron-free supply ideal for distilling bourbon.
That natural advantage helped transform the charming village, settled in 1780, into one of the country’s great whiskey capitals. Today Bardstown boasts eleven distilleries within a sixteen-mile radius—including Heaven Hill Distillery, Bardstown Bourbon Company, Lux Row Distillers, Preservation Distillery, and Barton 1792 Distillery—a veritable bounty of brown-water temptations tucked among stately Federal-style buildings and postcard-worthy streets, and the bucolic countryside.

Which is to say, getting into the spirit in this city is easy. Its walkable downtown streets, welcoming farmers’ market, and many farm-to-table restaurants have, not surprisingly, impressive bourbon collections.
You’re never far from a tasting room experience, either. Pull up a stool at Circa 1856 by Chicken Cock Whiskey—an upscale bourbon bar and proud stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail housed inside one of Bardstown’s oldest homes—where guests can sample flights of Straight Bourbon and Rye, Double Oak, and the distillery’s newly released small-batch bourbon. Just ten miles outside town, The Old SteelHouse Distillery occupies the site of Deatsville’s first commercial distilling operation and is now recognized as a National Historic Site. But thankfully, excellent pours are never far from downtown. The Old Steelhouse Distillery keeps a tasting room on Third Street, so visitors can simply walk to a dram of the good stuff.
But for all its reverence for bourbon heritage, Bardstown remains a city with its sights firmly set on the future. That spirit comes to life in November 2026 with the return of The Bardstown Collection, one of the most distinctive releases in American whiskey: a limited-edition collaborative bourbon series crafted by the distilleries that call the Bourbon Capital of the World home. Available exclusively in Bardstown, the release celebrates the esprit de corps that continues to shape Kentucky bourbon culture.
In a town where distilling traditions go back generations, competition may be part of the business, but collaboration remains its calling card. The Bardstown Collection brings together master distillers and whiskey makers from across the region, each contributing its own expertise, flavor profiles, and house styles to create a singular expression that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
The result is a spirit as strong as the Bardstown community, shaped by the limestone-filtered waters, aging warehouses, and creative minds that have made Bardstown an international whiskey destination. And because bottles are available only in Bardstown, securing one becomes part of the experience. It’s a chance to explore the bars, distilleries, and bourbon-soaked history that continue to define this legendary Kentucky destination.
