At Kiawah River, family is a vibrant tapestry woven together by the shared experiences of life in the rural South Carolina Lowcountry. Situated on 2,000 pristine acres, the unique riverfront community is rooted in the rhythms of the Sea Island landscape and its waterways. Here, under Spanish moss-draped oaks and towering pines, alongside yawning expanses of lush marshlands and in the brackish shallows of the area’s rivers, creeks, and ponds, Mother Nature invites grandparents, parents, and children to experience her splendor one paddling trip, crabbing excursion, trail walk, and afternoon porch gathering at a time—each new adventure deepening connections and bridging generations.

The living room

It was the dream of a coastal retreat where their blended family could gather and grow that compelled Chris and Charlene Daniels to turn left off Betsy Kerrison Parkway and into Kiawah River for the first time. But the two had long held different visions for what home should look like. Chris imagined a classic beach house—open, airy, and close to the coast. Charlene pictured something quieter and more connected to the land—peaceful, grounded, and rich with nature.

Kiawah River delighted them both. “Chris has always wanted property at the beach, but I just never wanted a beach house,” Charlene says. “When we came across Kiawah River, it meant access to so many other things, too. You have really quick access to the beach, but you can also walk down to the dock and the river. You have walking trails and hiking trails and the farm. To me, the farm brings it home.”

A home by the maritime forest along the Kiawah River exceeded their collective expectations. For Chris, the coastal energy, proximity to the water, and resort-style amenities checked every box. For Charlene, the presence of nature–the trees, wildlife, and especially the working farm– was exactly what she had hoped for. And for both, it offered something even more meaningful: a place where generations could come together, naturally.

Kiawah River, the Charleston area’s first agri-hood, is home to a hundred-acre working farm that sits at the center of the community. Residents enjoy farm-to-table living supported by community gardens and partnerships with local Johns Island farmers, who tend honeybees, goats, cattle, chickens, and seasonal produce and flowers. A particular favorite is the Goatery, an artisanal goat dairy that stocks residents’ kitchens and supplies award-winning chefs across the Lowcountry.

“Nature—and being surrounded by trees and wildlife—is really important to me,” Charlene says. “The farm with the cows and the goats, well, it was all just so peaceful.”

When the Kiawah River real estate team introduced the Danielses to a home under construction on a quiet lane fronting the farm and offering backporch views of Abbapoola Creek, they instantly knew it was the one. “We walked into the main living space, and we both said, ‘Wow.’ We’d fallen in love with the rendering, but then when we got there, it exceeded all of our expectations,” Charlene says. “I had a big old smile on my face.”

A bedroom outfitted with bunks for current and future grandchildren

Working with the team of Level Building Projects, Thomas & Denzinger Architects, and designer Wendy Mauro, the couple transformed the site into a home tailored to their large blended family. An upstairs bedroom became a cozy bunk room for grandchildren—one already here, another on the way–with space for future sleepovers and laughter. A tucked-away desk nook allows adult children to work remotely. Downstairs, the gathering spaces are open, contemporary, and welcoming, designed to foster togetherness and comfort. “You can be sitting in the living room and still connect with people
in the kitchen,” Chris says. “Everybody feels like
they’re together. It’s one of the things I love most
about the house.”

For Chris and Charlene, Kiawah River delivered on every hope they had—and many beyond their wildest dreams. His coastal lifestyle, her nature-rooted retreat, and a setting that naturally nurtures the bonds between generations. “The gift of watching the whole family bond in this place,” Charlene says, “is even more meaningful than we ever imagined.”
