Job Opening: Photo Editor 

Garden & Gun is seeking an experienced full-time photo editor to join its team in Charleston, South Carolina. The photo editor is responsible for assigning and producing original photography for each print edition of G&G, collaborating with photographers and overseeing shoots on a range of subject matter (from portraiture and still-life to sporting and travel), and managing the photo department’s calendar and day-to-day production needs. Ideal candidates will have a strong visual sensibility and be creative and passionate about the world of photography, with a deep understanding of G&G’s brand and aesthetic. They are detail-oriented and self-starting as well as enthusiastic and capable in a fast-paced magazine environment. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Producing multiple photo shoots each issue for a variety of sections, working with freelance photo teams, securing shoot locations, booking stylists and support crew, and creating call sheets 

• Managing contracts and budgets 

• Overseeing the photo production calendar, compiling credit and caption information for stories, and clearing rights and permissions for images

• Researching within the archival and stock agencies

• Maintaining a network and knowledge base of photographers, agents, and stylists

• Identifying new talent and pitching photographer ideas for shoots

Skills and qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree, with a focus in photography or a fine arts–related field preferred 

• A self-starter with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

• Ability to multitask and balance multiple deadlines while maintaining grace under pressure

• Photo-research experience and a solid understanding of current photo rights

• Proficiency with current photo-editing software, Adobe Creative Suite, and photography equipment

• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as shoots and deadlines dictate

• Ability to photograph subjects for print and web stories in-house as needed

• Eagerness to collaborate with team members and tackle new projects with enthusiasm

• 5-plus years’ experience in a magazine photo department strongly preferred
