To understand America’s history of distilling, visit a place that’s been producing spirits (legally and illegally) for generations. In the Great Smoky Mountain city of Sevierville, Tennessee, moonshine making is alive and well. Start your spirits journey at Tennessee Shine Co.’s Moonshine Museum. Here the history of the distilling process and its covert operations is on display. Try a nip of what was once called white lightning in the tasting room, then visit other distilleries like Old Tennessee Distilling Co. in nearby Kodak, with its appropriate outlaw vibe, or Shine Girl, the work of Dolly Parton’s niece, distiller and accomplished military pilot Danielle Parton. It’s not all ’shine in Sevierville, however. When you’re done with the hard stuff, visit award-winning wineries like Hillside Winery as well as breweries, including Iron Forge.
