Where the Lowcountry Blooms

Inside the enduring magic of Brookgreen Gardens

“Youth Taming the Wild” by Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973)

Since ancient Roman times, humans have carved out outdoor sanctuaries for quiet contemplation. Along South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, near Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, America’s first sculpture gardens continues that tradition. Founded in 1931, Brookgreen Gardens, is a living marriage of art and nature, unfurling across 9,000 acres of blush hued azaleas, delicate water lilies, tangerine colored zinnias, and more than 2,000 works of sculpture. Now, with the opening of the new Purdy Welcome Center and Conservatory Gardens this year, visitors have even more opportunities to immerse themselves in horticulture and fine art.
