Old Cuban

A sparkling way to celebrate your new vessel

A boat is a major lifestyle upgrade, a buoyant symbol of freedom and adventure, and sure, you could celebrate its acquisition by shattering a bottle of bubbly over the bow. That is, if you don’t mind sweeping up broken glass, possibly damaging the boat, and wasting perfectly good booze. Instead, relish that champagne in a delicious cocktail that further hoists the sailing theme with rum and lime. Distribute a round from the galley as the sun sets and seal your reputation not just as captain of the ship, but commodore of cocktails.

Ingredients

    • 1½ oz. aged rum, like Flor de Caña

    • ¾ oz. lime juice

    • ¾ oz. simple syrup

    • 4–5 fresh mint leaves, for garnish

    • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

    • 3 oz. champagne

Preparation

  1. In a shaker, combine all ingredients except champagne. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a champagne flute. Top with champagne and garnish with a fresh mint sprig.
