“On summer Saturdays or the festival days of winter, drinking all afternoon and night is a favorite Basque pastime,” says Marti Buckley, an Alabama native who lives in San Sebastian, Spain, and is the author of the new cookbook Basque Country: A Culinary Journey Through a Food Lover’s Paradise. “Kalimotxo is a mixture of equal parts red wine and cola that is a festival favorite in Basque Country.”
And for someone in the South? “I could see this as a fun and sophisticated tailgate drink,” she says. “The wine cuts through the sweetness of the Coke. Give it a little squeeze of lemon and it’s an easy, refreshing mixed drink.”
