The Velvet Hammer Cocktail

This adult milkshake is your new favorite nightcap

“This is a beloved drink in Augusta and it comes together very quickly,” writes Vera Stewart in her new cookbook, The VeryVera Cookbook: Occasions, which includes this deliciously boozy drink as an after-supper dessert cocktail. “Your guests will love this sweet treat to end the night.”

Be warned: There’s a reason Stewart serves this adult milkshake on the heels of a meal. “It’s the best milkshake you ever tasted. But if you really did not eat your supper very much, it’s gonna hit you like a ton of bricks,” she says.


  • The Velvet Hammer (Yield: 6 to 8 Servings)

    • 1 (1½-quart) container vanilla ice cream (Stewart recommends Breyers), slightly softened

    • ½ cup vodka, or adjusted to taste

    • ⅓ cup Kahlúa Coffee Liqueur, or adjusted to taste

    • Whipped cream, for topping

    • Maraschino cherries, for garnish


  1. Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth and combined. This drink is very much based on your own preferences, so feel free to adjust the amounts of alcohol to your taste.

  2. Pour the milkshake into glasses and top with whipped cream and a cherry on top. Enjoy responsibly!
